ENGARUKA AND ITS RUINS
At the
foot of the Great Rift Valley’s western
escarpment there is a great ruined area with at least seven former villages and
a complex irrigation system, estimated to be at least 500 years old. It is
considered to be one of the most important Tanzanian archeological sites. It’s
amazing to imagine how (most Sonjo) people could develop agriculture in such a
dry and stony environment. An even bigger mystery is why they left the region.
A
guide from Engaruka’s Cultural Tourism Program will gladly tell you more about
it.
